The sudden ubiquity of agents and large language models (LLMs) has left many of us bewildered with the rate of change and the sky-high expectations of artificial intelligence (AI). To navigate the current era of AI, it helps to understand how we got here. In this Curiosity Lab, alum and author Rachel Wagner Kaiser ’05 will start this session with a brief history of natural language processing (NLP), tracing the evolution from early rule-based systems to the modern power of generative models. Then, she will analyze how AI fits into the hype cycle and what that means for both individual users and teams trying to build useful AI solutions. Moving beyond the theory, she will walk through an end-to-end case study of an NLP solution at scale.
