The Secret Lives of Fungi: Genetics and the Growing Challenge of Antifungal Resistance

Fungal pathogens are an increasingly important but often overlooked threat to human health, causing serious infections in vulnerable populations worldwide. In this talk, Dr. Rebecca Shapiro, Assistant Professor at the College of Biological Science at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, will explore how modern genetic tools are helping us better understand how fungal pathogens adapt, survive, and develop resistance to antifungal drugs. By studying the genes and biological pathways that drive infection and treatment failure, her research aims to identify new strategies for combating these emerging global health threats. This presentation will provide a broad overview of fungal disease, the challenge of antifungal resistance, and how cutting-edge genetics can help shape the future of infectious disease research.
