Buckle up for SSPI’s first Ask Me Anything: a front-row seat to one of aerospace’s most electrifying frontiers — in-orbit satellite servicing and docking. Alum Dr. Dahlia Baker ’13 takes the hot seat for a candid, member-driven conversation about teaching spacecraft to rendezvous, dock, and service one another in orbit. Skip the lecture: after a brief introduction to her current work, the floor is entirely yours. Bring your questions on satellite servicing, orbital mechanics, RPOD technology, or the future of low-cost in-space operations, and steer the conversation wherever your curiosity leads.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Baker is a Spacecraft Guidance, Navigation, and Controls (GNC) Engineer at Starfish Space in Tukwila, Washington, where her work focuses on improving optical navigation algorithms for spacecraft-to-spacecraft docking in low Earth orbit and beyond. Her path began at the Summer Science Program in Socorro, New Mexico, in 2013, where she discovered a love for asteroids and space photography; in 2017, she was selected as a Brooke Owens Fellow to work with Planetary Resources, Inc. on asteroid mining mission development. She earned her PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder, where she studied asteroid shape modeling and rotational dynamics, supporting both the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission and the upcoming EMA asteroid inspection mission with LASP along the way. Today, she’s working to prove that rendezvous, proximity operations, and docking (RPOD) technologies can be developed and operated efficiently — unlocking low-cost in-orbit servicing, refueling, and assisted de-orbiting at end-of-life.
