Astro SSP GCSU Blog Day 1

GCSU Astro: Day 1

Hi guys! I’m coming at you from the first day of our official program schedule. People are awesome, faculty is amazing, lectures are rewarding, and the food is… slightly too sweet.

So we started off our day with gathering in the lobby to walk to breakfast together at 8, which consisted of half of the population being joyous and the other half wishing for a longer sleep. My personal breakfast consisted of salty porridge(?), pancakes, and a plate of grapes. A lot of people were complaining from last night being too cold, but breakfast was super chill bc I got to talk to a lot more people than on the first day.

Soon after breakfast we headed into lectures! After a quick round of surveys and computer setup, we received two awesome lectures from Dr. D and Dr. B. Lunch was fairly uneventful except a collective feedback that the food is much better than our first day, and we returned to our afternoon lecture in laughter.

Around 4:30, the TAs took us to CVS, where we got to stock up on laundry detergent, handsoap, and a bunch of other essentials that we found out we didn’t have (oh, and snacks). After we got back to the dorms at around 5:30, we changed into our formal outfits and headed to dinner.

Heading to our first dinner under the newly assigned seating, I was fairly nervous about the prospect of sitting with completely new strangers that I didn’t know the names. But actually eating dinner, I met much more new people and enjoyed the conversations we had. In the end, the hour passed more quicker than it felt, and I look forward to Day 2’s dinner with our awesome table 🙂

We returned to a quick dorm meeting in the lounge, where we (officially) found out the theme of our year — Avatar! (the animation one, not the blue sci-fi alien one)

Ft. Our super cool TAs and our light-up theme board

Finally, we came back to the lecture hall to finish our asteroid proposals…

After a collaborative effort on determining the viable asteroids, the room fell into chaotic chatter as everyone rushed to complete their own proposals.

Peace out, Kiana
