Georgia College and State University Astrophysics Day 17: day in the life
Hi SSP participants, alumni, prospective students, or anyone else reading!
Today was our first day officially in the second half of the program (so so crazy!!), and after a super fun “halfway point” yesterday, we were back to the standard lecture weekday schedule. We started our morning with Dr. B’s third writing workshop, where we dove into the abstracts & results sections by examining successful, published works through a jigsaw-style discussion structure. Then we had TA talks where three of our amazing TAs–Mark, Amy, and Megan– gave us short presentations on interesting astro topics in their respective fields of expertise.
Usually, lunches are usually at the GCSU dining hall, the MAX, but my friends decided to treat ourselves to the on-campus Einstein Bagels (I’ll miss this SO MUCH after SSP). We got yummy bagels & iced coffee pictured below:
Our afternoon consisted of three hours of learning THE Method of Gauss (MoG 🧏♀️) and our class was jumpscared when Dr. D rolled up the projector and started teaching the entire lesson on the chalkboard. Eventually we got through and it was 4PM & time to work on the observing methods section of our papers. Maia and I headed to the work room where we started feeling sick which was lowkey inevitable since almost EVERYONE has been sick at least once throughout our time here (side note: I’m writing this a week later and luckily neither of us actually got sick).
After dinner at the MAX, we went to work session for a few hours, finished writing our observing methods, put it in LaTeX (I used to hate LaTeX but as I was doing it I realized it was actually so cool) and for the rest of the night, my friends and I just hung out & did some late night snacking in the barn (AKA the basement/hangout lounge/kitchen) until curfew at 12.
