UNC Astro Blog – Day 19

The first day that we got to SSP they asked all students to pick a date to do the blog. When I was asked this question, I didn’t think twice before answering. I had my eyes set on the BIG July 4th. Today was the 249th Independence Day of the United States of America and we had scheduled a little field trip to celebrate. But that came later on.

The day began like any other. Everyone was still tired from the late observing the previous night, but we were still propelled into another lecture. Today both Dr. swift and Dr. Fu taught us about Exo-Planets and the infamous Drake equation that estimates the probable number of other active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations. To save all the readers the trouble to look up the answer yourselves, it is…just kidding. I am not allowed to help you cheat. 🙂

Since Chase was closed for the day (this made me happy and sad: Chase and I have a love hate relationship) we had dominos pizza for lunch. That is everyone except me. I was fasting for the day. After this we got some rest and then were back into the lion’s den (Philips) to work on the images of our asteroid we had taken the day before. Some were lucky enough to spot it, others not so much. LCO data > UNC data.

Then came the trip I had foreshadowed earlier. The very exciting and nail biter baseball game between the norfolk and Durham bulls. I don’t know how to express my intense sarcasm in regards to the previous sentence with words so I have to clarify now. It wasn’t all that. The highlight? The bulls mascot racing across the field’s boundary. See for yourself.

Adding a bit to this once in a lifetime experience was a once in a lifetime moment as one of our TAs met one of her idols. A beautiful image was taken to capture the raw emotions of this moment. I still don’t think a few pixels can do it any justice.

I know what you might be thinking. What kind of Independence Day celebration is complete without fireworks? Dear readers, I agree. But fear not, as the night came to a fairytale finish when the stadium erupted with a fireworks display.

Exhausated, sleepy, but with a dozen new memories made SSP UNC chapel hill concluded its Independence Day celebrations, and I my blog.

Goodnight Readers, I won’t keep you up any longer, mainly because I’m dozing off as I type this and partially because I am just a chill guy like that.

Just 2 chill guys hanging out.

Best wishes,
