University of Guelph Bacterial Genomics Day 7: Week 1 Complete
After our day of freedom and frozen yogurt from Menchie’s, we awoke again today early in the morning to resume the purpose of our stay here: the science. Some people got up extra early to get in a short run and some breakfast, while the rest (a.k.a. me) woke up 15 minutes before we had to leave, quickly got ready, and walked to the lab.
We began by quickly checking in on our chemostats; after a lot of unfortunate events over the past week (re-autoclaving, bacteria spilling, tubing breaking and spilling liquid everywhere), many groups were quite fearful of finding the state of their chemostat. However, to our delight, everything was running smoothly. We then spent the rest of the morning in lectures and walked over to grab a delicious lunch before coming back for, you guessed it, more lectures, specifically on bioinformatics.

After lectures, we headed over to dinner, where we had a range of options, from pasta with alfredo, to chicken parmesan, and to chocolate cake trifle. When we got back to the lab though, we had an unexpected surprise: the testing of fire alarms in the building, which would last up to 2 hours.
Due to this, we ended up going back where we ate dinner to work on some individual assignments. After that, we parted ways, got ready for bed, and slept.

Elise S.
SSP Participant
Hi, my name is Elise, a rising senior from Waukee, Iowa! If you haven’t guessed by my participation in this program, I love science, specifically biology. I’ve done other science programs and courses, including a 3 week Microbiology program last summer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and have conducted/presented research; my most recent project was on the connection between cancer and nitrates, with the link being hindered by a lack of water surveillance, specifically in Iowa. I am also the co-founder and co-president of a local non-profit, Next Scientists, where we aim to create future scientists and provide access to STEM for all students, especially those in low-income households and rural areas. I can’t believe the first week is over, and I’m excited to continue my journey with SSP!
