In this talk, we will explore the rich history of the Pythagorean Theorem. Although the theorem is named for Pythagoras, it was known to ancient mathematicians long before his time. For example, ancient Babylonian students were computing Pythagorean Triples for their math homework as early as 1800 BCE. So, who discovered it, and what exactly did they find out? The story of the Pythagorean theorem is ultimately a story of how we make meaning of mathematics and how the most profound mathematical discoveries can arise from the deepest tensions.
