7/5 – Lehigh Bacterial Genomics

Hi there! My name is Alice and I’n from New York. Both my parents are Ecuadorian and they immigrated to the United States as teenagers, so my siblings and I are first generation students. This summer I chose to do SSP because I thought it would be an opportunity like no other to explore my interests in biology. As week 2 is winding down, I can say there is a lot of work and the days are definitely very long, but I know that what I gain from this program will be unmatched. Throughout the week we did typical lab and lecture work. Although bioinformatics is a difficult subject and we’ve run into a lot of technological difficulties, the staff and people at SSP always make it worthwhile. We had a field trip to Philadelphia which was a lot of fun. We got to tour Integral Molecular, a biotech company, and their office building was beautiful. We also got to visit the Wagner free institute of science and even though it was really hot, it was an awesome experience. Friday was the fourth of July, which didn’t stop our workflow BUT we got to see fireworks from the parking lot outside of STEPS (Lehigh’s science building) which was beautiful! Overall, I’d say this week was pretty great.
