SWOSU Day 23: Week 4, Here We Come!

Where do magnets come from? (answer at bottom)

7:58

I walk (run) into the CPP right on time after frantically sprinting down the stairs and dashing across the parking lot.

8:10

After a quick whole-class meeting, we split into groups to characterize our metal complexes. Group 5 (me!) and Group 6 were assigned Magnetic Moment/NMR with Dr. Ellis, so we make our way across the building to Room 263, where Dr. Ellis gives a fascinating pre-lab lecture.

9:00

We gather in a lab to obtain Magnetic Moment, a very very very tedious job. Furthermore, the whole lab is packed with students fighting to use the scales.

10:30

After a small spreadsheets moment, I move to the NMR room to characterize my diamagnetic complex.

12:00

Lunch, finally! I eat orange ginger chicken and rice while sitting at a table of 10+ people.

12:40

After, Joy, Rezaan, and I go to the Beanery to get drinks in preparation for the next three hours. I get the Finding Nemo, and it’s actually super good.

13:00

Back in the CPP, I prep for three hours of lectures. Dr. Hubin teaches us about Coordination Complex geometry while Dr Ellis teaches about Elimination reactions.

16:00

Dinner!!! I accidentally leave my name tag in my dorm, so I rely on a generous donation from TA Amogh to buy dinner. I sit with my new dinner group, and we have fascinating conversations.

18:00

While this is usually when we have ethics/safety/writing, due to some unfortunate circumstances, we have free time until 7:00 pm. We band together and clean the dorms, which have collected some trash after three weeks.

Then, Ethan comes out with a minuscule coconut, and we all spectate as Sughan dramatically cracks it open (and also chips the wall). Despite losing all the coconut water, we all share the coconut Ryan cuts with his army knife.

19:00

Back at the CPP, I grind out an ethics essay about Jenny Ito and struggle through the inorganic pset.

21:00

We gather in the main room to meet our new site director, Christin Latus. I can’t believe she drove seven hours to come here! I’m excited to get to know her better.

22:00

We migrate to the dorms, getting out instant ramen and finishing our organic psets.

00:00

I cheer with everyone as it turns from June to July! It’s amazing how quickly time has flown.

12:05

I enter my dorm, get ready for bed, and fall asleep as soon as my head hits my pillow. (Jk I doomscroll for another 30 minutes.)

(Answer: A magnetic field)

Julia

Hi! My name is Julia, and I’m from Portland, Oregon. I like taking photos, making desserts, and doing taekwondo. I love chemistry, and I’m looking forward to the next few weeks!
