SWOSU Day 34: 10 Things I Hate about SSP Synth Chem: A Love Letter

Yes, the title was a little bit clickbait. Yes, this is going to be themed off the movie 10 Things I Hate About You (not really though, since I don’t know that many quotes). I think a more fitting and less controversial title might be: 10 Things I (Love) about SSP Synth Chem.

Anyways, my day started off around the usual 12 am time. Just kidding. A lof of us just came back to the dorms late because we had been working on our poster and our problem sets and were allowed to stay later than usual.

From left to right: Wendy, I, Hannah, and Joy back in the dorms after finishing our psets.

I chose sleep over breakfast due to my late bedtime, so there’s no breakfast photo for today. The funny thing is, I remember reading some of the blogs from last year and seeing them talk about skipping breakfast and thinking, “Why would you skip breakfast?” Lo and behold, not even a week later, I found myself doing exactly that.

Today was a pretty big workday; our posters were due at 12:00 pm, and our papers were due the next day at noon. I truly wanted to capture some fun moments for the blog, but every time I remembered to take a picture, we were all just working away at our papers.

Wendy and Sophia locked in on their papers.

Due to some technical issues, some groups were unable to finish by the noon deadline and thus had a more rushed lunch. Because of the sense of urgency needed when getting lunch, there are no photos from it. I will however, include some cute photos of some of us in the lab and a picture of the lab itself. Also, Joy was bought a gorgeous cherry blossom latte (no picture available 🙁).

After lunch, Dr. Hubin’s son, Daniel Hubin gave us a presentation/talk about the process of picking out colleges you want to go to (for both undergraduate and graduate degree options) school. Photos were unfortunately not taken during said talk.

After the presentation, we went back to working on our paper. See below a couple photos of kids working away at their papers.

Dinner was pretty fun tonight – at least food-wise. We had Osaki catered which was really amazing. See below for images of said delicious food.

Everyone loves Osaki’s

After dinner we went back to grinding out our paper. See images below as reference lol.

Finally, for the last part of my blog, here it is, the poem you’ve totally been waiting for (heavily inspired by the poem from the movie):

I love that it was for five weeks

And that we walked everywhere

I love that our faculty was marvelous

I love how much they cared

I love that we had lab every day

And that we got so much done.

I hate that it is over now

Because it was so fun.

I love the way everyone connected

I love that we all vibed

I hated when we had to leave

Even worse when we said goodbye

I hate that we won’t always be together

I hope that we’ll all call

I’m going to miss everyone so much.

I loved the academic rigor.

I loved the people

I loved it all.

Andy

Hey y’all, my name is Andy and I’m from Texas! I like chemistry (shocker, I know), playing with my dog Thunder (she’s literally so sweet), reading and painting. In my freetime I enjoy playing piano and/or basketball, and watching the TV show Elementary. I’m so happy to be here!
