SWOSU Day 4: Blog?

Hey everyone! So day 4…

Before Class

I woke up at 6:40, turned off my alarm, and slept till 7:20. Yesterday, Ryan, Catey, Rena, Ethan and I all stayed up till 11:59 pm (still before lights out), playing Geoguessr. It was super fun, and hopefully we’ll get some more people playing with us, but it messed up my sleep pretty bad, so I’m not able to go on a morning run. Anyways, I just showered and got ready (it’s 7:46), so I think I have time to dart over to Duke’s Diner and grab some cereal.

Lab

After filling myself up with some performance fuel (Apple Jacks), I headed over to the CPP (Chemistry, Physics, Pharmacy) building for lab. Today, we mainly worked on characterizing our samples using IR (Infrared) and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy techniques, which will help validate that we’ve created the right reaction products. We also calculated the percent yield of our samples, or how much produce we were able to create relative to the expected product based on the reaction. So far, I’ve been the assistant/foreman/scribe, and I haven’t gotten to conduct an experiment as a technician. But, what I have been able to do is spend some quality time cleaning glassware with the acid and base baths, with the butyl glove that reaches up to my shoulder. Hopefully my hands don’t turn to soap from the base. We also spent some time brainstorming team names: ours is the Cattle “Rust”ers, cause we’re working with iron ions (hopefully). I think we’re getting our feedback on the ions tomorrow?

Orgo

After a rather underwhelming lunch: hamburger steak 🥩 (cmon SWOSU), we headed back to the CPP for safety and ethics instruction. It was going well, but I was starting to get the tiniest bit bored 🥱 ( sorry Dr. Hubin) until we brought out the fire extinguishers. Afterwords we had organic lecture, which was pretty fun. I think we covered more content in that one lecture than an entire semester of high school chem. We started the 2 hrs talking about methane and finished with (4E, 8E)-4-cyclohexyl-6-methyl-5-pentyl-dodeca-4,8-diene.

In-orgo

We broke for our business-casual dinner, where we spent some time contemplating the question of the day (which me and Jonathan A. were able to crack after bouncing a few stupid ideas off of each other) and eating some surprisingly good chicken alfredo pasta with M and M cookie bars for dessert. Then we went to inorganic lecture, where we covered VSEPR theory and molecular geometry (which I’m still trying to understand).

End of the day (almost)

I was stoked, class was over… but then I remembered I had 3 psets to do. No time like the present, am I right? Me, Ethan, Hannah, Haris and both Jonathans headed over to room 259, to study. We also ate some chips and tried to make tea in a kettle. After a brief excursion to find sugar, we quickly got to work demolishing the psets. At ten, we headed back to the dorms, and Ethan and I decided to go for a run. Well actually, since it’s workout Wednesday, we did some reps on the concrete (cmon SWOSU) track 💨. We headed back, showered, and now we’re gonna go catch some 💤.

C u tmrw guys.

Sughan

Hey guys, my name is Sughan, and I’m from Long Island, New York. I enjoy reading, running, and talking. This photo is not a reflection of what I look like, it was on travel day, and I was kinda sore, which is why I look a bit lopsided.
